Homozygous inactivation of this gene results in microcytic anemia, increased erythrocyte cell number, abnormal reticulocyte morphology, anisopoikilocytosis, decreased mean corpuscular hemoglobin, decreased mean corpuscular volume, and thrombocytosis.
