Results
Specimen 1b: postnatal week 4 (more )
Structure Cell Type Level Pattern Image Note
TS28: long bone epiphyseal plate ossification zone perivascular cell Present Regionally restricted 1c , 1b Expression was detected at the chondro-osseous junction between the growth plate cartilage and metaphysis of the proximal tibia. Immunoreactive cells were arranged regularly at short intervals in parallel with the bottom line of the growth plate. These cells were mononuclear and spindle in shape with long processes extending toward the hypertrophic zone of the growth plate. These cells appear to be septoclasts/perivascular cells.

Immunoreactive cells were arranged regularly at short intervals in parallel with the bottom line of the growth plate. These cells were mononuclear and spindle in shape with long processes extending toward the hypertrophic zone of the growth plate. These cells appear to be septoclasts/perivascular cells.

Specimen 6a: embryonic day 16.5 (more )
Structure Level Pattern Image Note
TS24: long bone epiphyseal plate Present Widespread 6a Immunopositive cells were distributed relatively more widely throughout the growth plate at E16 than at postnatal stages. Small immunopositive cells having a single nucleus and some short processes were distributed not only at the bottom of the growth plate (chondro-osseus junction) but also in the metaphysis.

Specimen 6c: postnatal newborn (more )
Structure Cell Type Level Pattern Image Note
TS27: long bone epiphyseal plate ossification zone perivascular cell Present Regionally restricted 6c In the growing growth plate of newborn (postnatal week 0) mice, many immunoreactive cells were observed at the chondro-osseus junction. The immunoreactive cells possessed long processes directed toward the bottom of the growth plate cartilage.
TS27: long bone metaphysis Present Single cells 6c

Specimen 6d: postnatal week 1 (more )
Structure Cell Type Level Pattern Image Note
TS28: long bone epiphyseal plate ossification zone perivascular cell Present Regionally restricted 6d In the tibial growth plate at suckling stages (postnatal week 1), immunopositive cells at the chondro-osseus junction were increased in number; and the distance between the immunoreactive cells was shorter than that in newborns. The number of septoclasts increased in number from E16 to postnatal week 1-2.
TS28: tibia metaphysis Present Single cells 6d

Specimen 6e: postnatal week 2 (more )
Structure Cell Type Level Pattern Image Note
TS28: long bone epiphyseal plate ossification zone perivascular cell Present Regionally restricted 6e In the tibial growth plate at suckling stages (postnatal week 2), immunopositive cells at the chondro-osseus junction were increased in number; and the distance between the immunoreactive cells was shorter than that in newborns. The number of septoclasts increased in number from E16 to postnatal week 1-2, and the peak number was reached at postnatal week 2.
TS28: tibia metaphysis Present Regionally restricted 6e The number of immunopositive cells in the metaphysis increased from newborn to postnatal week 2.

TS28: long bone epiphyseal plate ossification zone perivascular cell Present Regionally restricted 6f In the tibial growth plate of young mice after weaning (postnatal week 3), the distribution of immunopositive cells at the chondro-osseus junction was very similar to that at postnatal week 1.
TS28: tibia metaphysis Present Single cells 6f Very few cells were immunopositive in the metaphysis at this time.

Specimen 6g: postnatal week 4 (more )
Structure Cell Type Level Pattern Image Note
TS28: long bone epiphyseal plate ossification zone perivascular cell Present Regionally restricted 6g In the tibial growth plate of young mice after weaning (postnatal week 4), the distribution of immunopositive cells at the chondro-osseus junction was very similar to that at postnatal week 1.
TS28: tibia metaphysis Present Single cells 6g Very few cells were immunopositive in the metaphysis at this time.

Specimen 6h: postnatal week 9 (more )
Structure Cell Type Level Pattern Image Note
TS28: long bone epiphyseal plate ossification zone perivascular cell Present Regionally restricted 6h In the growth plate at sub-adult stage (postnatal week 9), numerous immunopositive cells were arranged along the chondro-osseus junction with a distribution pattern similar to that at the postnatal week 3 or 4 stage, but a decrease in number of immunoreactive cells with a distribution at wider distances from one another was clearly observed. The number of septoclasts at postnatal week 9 decreased to about 40% of the number found at postnatal week 2.
