• many retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN) neurons are pH-insensitive and those that remain pH-sensitive exhibit lower firing rates across a pH range compared with control cells
• under voltage clamp, the pH-dependent background potassium current is absent unlike in control cells
• when dialyzed with GTP-gamma-S, RTN neurons exhibit diminished membrane potential with repeated pH changes unlike wild-type cells
