mortality/aging
• mice infected with the EMC2012 strain of Middle East respiratory coronavirus (MERS-CoV) all die by day 10 post infection

immune system
• spleen of MERS-CoV-infected mice shows necrosis of splenic cells and increased reticulum cells in red pulp with hemosiderin deposition at 5 and 9 dpi
• MERS-CoV-infected mice show an increase in cytokines such as IFN-gamma, IP-10, and IL-17 in the serum on 5 dpi
• serum IFN-gamma levels are increased at 5 dpi with MERS-CoV
• serum IL-17 levels are increased at 5 dpi with MERS-CoV
• MERS-CoV-infected mice show characteristics of viral encephalitis in the brain at 9 dpi, with perivascular cuffs and neuronal cell necrosis in the cerebral cortex
• MERS-CoV-infected mice show mild to moderate liver damage on 5 dpi, including scattered hepatocyte necrosis and numerous activated Kupffer cells and macrophage infiltrates in hepatic sinusoid and by 9 dpi, fatty change in hepatocytes with less necrosis is seen
• MERS-CoV-infected mice show mild interstital inflammation in the kidneys with inflammatory cell infiltration in the interstitium and exudates of renal tubules on 5 dpi and increased renal tubular epithelial cell injury with focal hemorrhage in the renal interstitium by 9 dpi
• MERS-CoV-infected mice show mild inflammation in the lungs with focal exudation and hemorrhage at 5 days post infection (dpi), and more severe damage with diffused alveolar damage, alveolar septal thickening, hemorrhage, and activated macrophage infiltration at 9 dpi
• mice infected with the EMC2012 strain of Middle East respiratory coronavirus (MERS-CoV) exhibit decreased activity and weigh less from day 6 after infection and die by 10 days post infection (dpi)
• type I and type II pneumocytes in the lungs, tubular epithelial cells in the kidneys, and neuronal cell bodies, dendrites, axons, and some microglia in the cerebral cortex, including the hippocampus, express viral antigen
