Characteristics

Rats exhibit markedly heavy plaque formation on the lower incisors and develop both periodontal pocket and gingivitis after being fed with a commercial powdered diet (Shinohara et al 1991). Pocket depth was correlated with the amount of salivary sialic acid in pilocarpine-stimulated saliva, but not with serum sialic acid (Shinohara et al, 1994).
