Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele exhibit abnormal embryonic development and embryonic lethality likely due to iron overload. Heterozygotes exhibit premature death and are prone to spontaneous tumors and liver abnormalities, including steatosis, hepatitis, and hepatocellular carcinoma.
