Homozygous inactivation of this gene leads to accumulation of 8-hydroxyguanine and altered DNA repair. Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele remain healthy until at least 18 months of age. Mice homozygous for another knock-out allele develop spontaneouslung adenoma/carcinoma at ~1.5 years of age.
