Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele show alterations in presynaptic striatal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and reduced persistent nicotine-induced dopamine release in striatal synaptosomes. Homozygous KO also leads to lower body weight, reduced grip strength, hypoactivity, increased sociability, decreased startle reflex and enhanced spatial working memory.
