Half of homozygotes for a null allele show delayed maturation of hearing thresholds, high-frequency hearing loss, vulnerability to noise damage and demyelination of spiral ganglion neurons. Homozygotes for another null allele show normal sciatic nerve conduction with no auditory or visual deficits.
