The protein protects against rotavirus infection. Homozygous KO leads to increased susceptibility to infection and greater severity of pathology. Mice homozygous for null alleles of Nlrp9a, Nlrp9b, and Nlrp9c exhibit reduced litter size, incomplete preimplantation lethality, delayed or impaired blastocyst formation, and failure of cell division at the 2 cell stage.
