Homozygotes for a null allele are overtly normal when fed a zinc-replete diet but show increased sensitivity to the effects of maternal dietary zinc deficiency during pregnancy. Resulting embryos are often growth retarded with craniofacial and limb defects, and show altered iron and calcium levels.
