This carboxylesterase is active with substrates 5-bromoindoxyl acetate and alpha-naphthyl butyrate. Five electrophoretic alleles are known: a in M.m. molossinus; b in M.m. castaneus; c in C57BL/10 and most inbreds; d (null) in SK/Cam; e in M. spretus. The b allele also determines expression in lung.
