Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele exhibit a zinc deficiency in several brain regions, abnormal astrocyte morphology, increased susceptibility to kainic acid induced seizures, and altered zinc accumulation and neuronal death in certain brain areas following seizure-induced or acute brain injury.
