Homozygotes for a null allele show increased cardiac capillary density, coronary flow, hemoglobin and hematocrit levels. Many mice homozygous for another null allele die of heart failure at midgestation; survivors show hypervascularity, altered NO metabolism, and hypoxia-induced cardiac dysfunction.
