Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele exhibit a mild progressive retinal degeneration caused by loss of both M-cone and S-cone photoreceptor cells that is accompanied by oxidative stress. Another null allele shows increased anxiety-like behaviors and disrupted fear conditioning recall. Males are resistant age-related gain in body mass.
