Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele show complete lethality prior to organogenesis. Cultured blastocysts fail to hatch from the zona pellucida, show apparent cell death, and form atypical outgrowth colonies with no trophectoderm, primitive endoderm or epiblast cells.
