Homozygous inactivation of this gene results in complete preweaning lethality, edema, abnormal skin coloration, thick epidermis, acanthosis, tail/limb abnormalities, and defects in lymphatic vascular development and valve formation. Heterozygosity for global or SMC-specific KO reduces aortic atherosclerotic plaque burden after high-fat diet.
