P. W. Lane. New mutants: Dancer: This mutation occurred spontaneously in the C3H/J-ob stock at about the 4th backcross generation. The Dancer animals exhibit a circling behavior much like waltzers but with less head movement. Dancers are not deaf and cannot swim. This seems to be a dominant gene since outcrosses to C57BL/6J and C3H B/J animals have given a total of 63 offsprings, 26 to 37 normals. Dancer X Dancer matings have given 52 dancers to 37 normals. The symbol Dc is suggested for this gene. Athetoid: This mutation arose spontaneously in the inbred line of C3HeB. The athetoid animal exhibits athetoid movements, choreifom movements and some opisthotonus. The animal is unable to stand or walk normally and makes constant swimming motions on its belly. The condition is so severe no athetoid has lived beyond 23 days. The gene is recessive and ah is selected for the symbol. Matings of,known carriers have to date produced a total of 61 animals, classified as 45 normals, and 16 athetoids. Mahogany: This condition was mentioned in the February 1954 Research News Supplement of MNL. It appears to be a recessive gene which in the homozygous condition darkens the dorsal area of the wild type coat and greys the belly. On the black non-agouti background it behaves like the extreme non-agouti gene. The ears, tail and feet of the black mahogany animal are darker than a C57BL/6 and there are no yellow hairs evident in the ears nor are any white hairs evident behind the ears or around the prineum or nipples. Outcrosses of mahogany to C57BL/J and C3H/J produced all non-mahogany animals. The intercross and backcross data collected to date indicate a fairly close linkage between mahogany and the agouti locus 12-14%. However more data are needed to confirm this. The symbol used is mq.
