Homozygous mutants for the spontaneous recessive flexed-tail allele have axial skeletal abnormalities, abnormal heme biosynthesis, and a transient sideroblastic anemia that disappears a few weeks after birth. The tail and belly spot phenotypes have variable penetrance.
