Notes
Found in a wild population in the Plant Breeding Institute, Cambridge. It was discovered because it occurred in this population on the same chromosome as a closely linked color mutation, extreme dilution (Tyrc-e), whose frequency was noted to be increasing. Wild-type mice of both sexes were fully susceptible when tested at 4 months of age. Both War/War and War/+ females were fully resistant when tested under the same conditions. Less than 100 per cent of similarly tested War/War males were resistant, and the proportion of resistant War/+ males was intermediate between that and 0 per cent. Modifying genetic factors affected the degree of resistance in males but not in females. A similar mutation for warfarin resistance occurs in the rat and occupies an analogous position linked to the p and Tyr loci in that species (J:5635).
