Mapping and Phenotype information for this QTL, its variants and associated markersJ:6378093 male and female (C57BL/6J-Ay/a x KK-Ay/a)F2 Ay/a animals were used to screen loci modifying the sootiness of yellow coat color. Mice carrying the yellow pigmentation allele, Ay, on a KK background have a darker "sooty" appearance with males exhibiting more sootiness than females. Animals carrying the yellow pigmentation allele, Ay, on a C57BL/6J background have bright orange-yellow coats. Loci on proximal mouse Chromosome 15 were identified for linkage with color difference at 29.7 cM, (Cdif, LOD = 7.0 at D15Mit232), pheomelanin levels at 14.2 cM (Pheo, LOD = 4.6 at D15Mit136), and Y-value at 14.2 cM (Yv, LOD = 12.3 at D15Mit136). KK-derived alleles appear to have a dominant effect at Pheo, and KK-derived alleles appear to have recessive or additive effects at Cdif and Yv. A possible candidate gene in this region is dds (dorsal dark stripe). Suggestive loci were detected for eumelanin levels (LOD = 3.2 at D10Mit184) and eumelanin/pheomelanin ratio (LOD = 3.6 at D10Mit184) on mouse Chromosome 10 at 25.5 cM and on mouse Chromosome 1 at 51 cM for eumelanin/pheomelanin ratio (LOD = 3.4 at D10Mit10). A possible candidate gene for the locus on mouse Chromosome 10 is the grey-lethal gene, gl, and a possible candidate gene for the locus on mouse Chromosome 1 is the leaden gene, ln. |
