487 animals from a heterogeneous stock designated UM-HET3 were analyzed for bone (femur) geometry traits. UM-HET3 is derived from a cross between (BALB/cJ x C57BL/6J)F1 x (C3H/HeJ x DBA/2J)F1. 99 polymorphic markers at an average spacing of 15 cM - 20 cM were used in the genome scan. Nine geometric traits were evaluated for each femur.

Linkage to maximum outer fiber length (MaxOFL) and standard deviation of outer fiber length (StdOFL) map to 28.1 cM on mouse Chromosome 7 near D7Mit91. This locus is designated Fmgty6. C57BL/6J-derived alleles confer increased MaxOFL and StdOFL compared to BALB/cJ-derived alleles.
