More than 1000 animals from an (M16i x L6)F2 intercross were typed for 63 polymorphic markers over 19 autosomes to identify QTLs associated with growth traits. Body weight was measured at 21, 42, and 70 days of age. Tail length was measured at 70 days asan indicator of skeletal growth. Parental strain M16i exhibits high weight gain between 21 and 42 days of age while parental strain L6 exhibits low weight gain. LOD=3.3 was used as the cutoff for statistically significant linkage.

On mouse Chromosome 5,Lgq6 and W10q16 map to an interval between D5Mit148 and D5Mit157. Lgq6 peaks at 26.3 cM and W10q16 peaks at 42.8 cM. M16i-derived alleles at Lgq6 confer increased late growth with recessive or additive inheritance. This locus explains 2.8% of the variance. The 1 LOD confidence interval for W10q16 spans 29.4 cM - 61.8 cM. M16i-derived alleles at W10q16 confer increased body weight at 10 weeks of age with dominant or additive inheritance. This locus explains 2.8% of the variance.
