A locus affecting mandible shape was identified in a congenic line carrying a BALB/cBy-derived H2 region on a C57BL/6J genetic background (B6.C-H2^d). The locus is named Mdmg1 (mandibular morphogenesis 1) and confers elgonation of the dorsal edge of thecondylar process. Analysis of B6.C-H2^d subset lines positioned Mdmg1 proximal to the H2 locus.
