Mapping and Phenotype information for this QTL, its variants and associated markers

J:117546

Eighteen month old animals from a 4-way cross derived from parental strains BALB/cJ, C57BL/6J, C3H/HeJ, and DBA/2J were typed for 185 biallelic markers to identify QTLs associated with vertebral morphology and mechanical traits.

Vmmt1 (vertebral morphology and mechanical traits 1) mapped to 80 cM on mouse Chromosome 1 near D1Mit105. This locus is associated with mechanical load with C57BL/6J-derived alleles conferring higher loads before failure compared to BALB/cJ-derived alleles. Vmmt1 is also linkedto vertebral morphological traits, such as bone volume fraction, cross sectional area, shell thickness, vertebral height, and moment of inertia. C57BL/6J is also the high allele in these measurements except for shell thickness where C3H/HeJ alleles increase the trait value compared to DBA/2J alleles.

Vmmt2 (vertebral morphology and mechanical traits 2) mapped to 51 cM on mouse Chromosome 2 near D2Mit58. Vmmt2 is associated with middle cross sectional area and vertebral height. DBA/2J-derived alleles at Vmmt2 confer increased vertebral height. A second locus, Vmmt3, mapped to 86 cM near D2Mit285 with C57BL/6J-derived alleles conferring increased moment of inertia compared to BALB/cJ.

Vmmt4 (vertebral morphology and mechanical traits 4) mapped to 67 cM onmouse Chromosome 4 near D4Mit170. BALB/cJ-derived alleles at Vmmt4 confer increased bone volume fraction and shell thickness compared to C57BL/6J. Vmmt20 mapped to 50 cM near D4Mit155. C3H/HeJ-derived alleles at Vmmt20 confer increased middle and proximalcross sectional area, shell thickness, and moment of inertia compared to DBA/2J.

Vmmt5 (vertebral morphology and mechanical traits 5) mapped to 12 cM on mouse Chromosome 5 near D5Mit251. DBA/2J-derived alleles at Vmmt5 confer increased bone volume fraction, distal cross sectional area, and shell thickness compared to C3H/HeJ. Vmmt6 mapped to 45 cM near D5Mit205 with BALB/cJ-derived alleles conferring increased distal cross sectional area compared to C57BL/6J. Vmmt7 mapped to 61 cM near D5Mit25. BALB/cJ-derived alleles at Vmmt7 confer increased bone volume fraction, trabecular plate number, and proximal cross sectional area compared to C57BL/6J.

Vmmt8 (vertebral morphology and mechanical traits 8) mapped to 41 cM on mouse Chromosome 8 near D8Mit51. DBA/2J-derived alleles at Vmmt8 confer increased trabecular plate number and moment of inertia compared to C3H/HeJ. Vmmt9 mapped to 71 cM near D8Mit42 with DBA/2J-derived alleles conferring increased bone volume fraction compared to C3H/HeJ.

Vmmt10 (vertebral morphology and mechanical traits 10) mapped to 63 cM on mouse Chromosome 14 near D14Mit170. C3H/HeJ-derived alleles at Vmmt10 confer increased bone volume fraction and trabecular plate number while DBA/2J-derived alleles confer increasedvertebral height. Vmmt11 mapped to 44 cM near D14Mit263 with C3H/HeJ-derived alleles conferring increased proximal cross sectional area and shell thickness compared to DBA/2J.

Vmmt12 (vertebral morphology and mechanical traits 12) mapped to 34 cM on mouse Chromosome 11near D11Mit156. C3H/HeJ-derived alleles at Vmmt12 confer increased distal and proximal cross sectional area compared to DBA/2J.

Vmmt13 (vertebral morphology and mechanical traits 13) mapped to 29 cM on mouse Chromosome 15 near D15Mit63. C3H/HeJ-derivedalleles at Vmmt13 confer increased distal and proximal cross sectional area compared to DBA/2J.

Vmmt14 (vertebral morphology and mechanical traits 14) mapped to 10 cM on mouse Chromosome 17 near D17Mit46. C57BL/6J-derived alleles at Vmmt14confer increaseddistal, proximal, and middle cross sectional area, moment of inertia, and ultimate load compared to BALB/cJ.

Vmmt15 (vertebral morphology and mechanical traits 15) mapped to 49 cM on mouse Chromosome 10 near D10Mit230. C3H/HeJ-derived alleles at Vmmt15confer increased proximal cross sectional area compared to DBA/2J.

Vmmt16 (vertebral morphology and mechanical traits 16) mapped to 48 cM on mouse Chromosome 9 near D9Mit110 with C3H/HeJ-derived alleles conferring increased shell thickness standard deviation compared to DBA/2J. Vmmt17 mapped to 55 cM near D9Mit12 with C57BL/6J-derived alleles conferring increased displacement at ultimate load compared to BALB/cJ.

Vmmt18 (vertebral morphology and mechanical traits 18) mapped to 40 cM on mouse Chromosome3near D3Mit73 with DBA/2J-derived alleles conferring increased moment of inertia compared to C3H/HeJ.

Vmmt19 (vertebral morphology and mechanical traits 19) mapped to 3 cM on mouse Chromosome 7 near D7Mit76. DBA/2J-derived alleles at Vmmt19 confer increasedvertebral height compared to C3H/HeJ.
