Mapping and Phenotype information for this QTL, its variants and associated markersJ:143893Genetic loci affecting mandible size and shape were mapped using 190 mice from a (C57BL/6JJcl x KK-Ay/TaJcl)F2 intercross. Of the F2 population, 97 animals had the Ay/a genotype and 93 animals had the a/a genotype. Thirteen measurements taken from the right mandible and 3 principal components were assessed in experimental animals 6-7 months of age. Parental strain KK-Ay/TaJcl displays increased values across most of the 13 mandible measurements compared to parental strain C57BL/6JJcl. The Ay allele increases mandible size in KK animals compared to the a allele. A panel of 100 polymorphic markers was used for linkage analysis. Mssq3 (mandible size and shape QTL 3) mapped to mouse Chromosome 4 near D4Mit103 (1.3 cM) in the a/a F2 group and mappednear D4Mit1 (6.3 cM) in the combined F2 group. KK-derived alleles at Mssq3 confer increased mandible size with LOD=3.6 at D4Mit103 and LOD=3.8 at D4Mit1. Mssq4 (mandible size and shape QTL 4) mapped to 44.5 cM near D4Mit166 in the a/a F2 group (LOD=3.9) and combined F2 population (LOD=2.7). KK-derived alleles at Mssq4 confer increased mandible size. Manln5 at 36 cM is a previously identified QTL overlapping with Mssq4. Mssq5 (mandible size and shape QTL 5) mapped to 71 cM near D4Mit234 (LOD=3.8) in the combined F2 population. C57BL/6JJcl-derived alleles at Mssq5 confer increased mandible size. Mssq3, Mssq4 and Mssq5 account for 9%, 6% and 9% of the variation in mandible size, respectively. |
