Mapping and Phenotype information for this QTL, its variants and associated markers

J:143893

Genetic loci affecting mandible size and shape were mapped using 190 mice from a (C57BL/6JJcl x KK-Ay/TaJcl)F2 intercross. Of the F2 population, 97 animals had the Ay/a genotype and 93 animals had the a/a genotype. Thirteen measurements taken from the right mandible and 3 principal components were assessed in experimental animals 6-7 months of age. Parental strain KK-Ay/TaJcl displays increased values across most of the 13 mandible measurements compared to parental strain C57BL/6JJcl. The Ay allele increases mandible size in KK animals compared to the a allele. A panel of 100 polymorphic markers was used for linkage analysis.

Mssq8 (mandible size and shape QTL 8) on mouse Chromosome 8 is linked to principal component 3 at D8Mit58 (1 cM; LOD=5.1) in the a/a F2 population and at D8Mit281 (11 cM; LOD=5.7) in the combined F2 population. C57BL/6JJcl-derived alleles at Mssq8 confer increased values for PC3 mandible measurements. Principal component 3 values also displayed suggestive linkage to a locus at 30 cM near D8Mit205 (LOD=3.1).
