hearing/vestibular/ear
• mice with cysts also have have rudimentary semicircular canals
• the expected flattening of the caudolateral wall is not seen at E11
• the majority of mutant mice have rudimentary canals and also cysts although the condition may not be bilateral
• a large endolymphatic space unassociated with a stria vascularis or an endolymphatic duct and sac is seen in mature mutant mice
• at E12 otic vesicles of mutant mice lacked an endolymphatic duct

cellular
• at E11 the cell cycle time of a developing otocyst is shorter than that seen in a heterozygous littermate or a CBA/J mouse
• at E11 the premitotic phase of a developing otocyst is longer than seen in a heterozygous littermate or CBA/J mouse

growth/size/body

skeleton
• ectopic development of a second arch structure, a hyoid lesser horn, in an area normally derived from the third arch results in an accessory process
• an accessory process is seen on the greater horn of the hyoid bone

craniofacial

• a second arch anlange develops in an area normally derived from a third arch resulting in an accessory process on the greater horn of the hyoid bone

embryo
• a second arch anlange develops in an area normally derived from a third arch resulting in an accessory process on the greater horn of the hyoid bone
• the third arch structure does not develop
• segmentation does not occur caudally from the boundary between rhombomeres 3 and 4
• two rhombomeres do not develop resulting in ectopic structure development

behavior/neurological

hearing/vestibular/ear
• at E9 the otic vesicle is in an abnormal position, likely due to abnormal neural tube development (J:13001)
• an imperfect capsule forms around the vesicle (J:13001)
• the adult ear mainly comprises a large sac containing endolymphatic and perilymphatic spaces
• extracapsular cysts grow through gaps in the otic capsule become quite large and locate under the brain
• the capsule is not continuous allowing extracapsular cysts to grow into the otic vesicle
• only occasional areas of sensory epithelium are noted

reproductive system
• males are more likely to breed than females

embryo
• at E9.5 the neural tube posterior to the boundary between rhombomeres 3 and 4 appears unsegmented (J:1490)
• abnormal segmentation of the neural tube in the region of the rhombencephalon is seen in E8.75 embryos (J:13001)
• at E9.5 the region normally corresponding to rhombomere 4 is unusually thick-walled and contains many dying cells (J:1490)
• extensive cell degeneration occurs in the fourth rhombomere after E8 (J:13001)
• at E9.5 the region normally corresponding to rhombomere 5 is unusually thick-walled and contains many dying cells

nervous system
• at E9.5 the neural tube posterior to the boundary between rhombomeres 3 and 4 appears unsegmented (J:1490)
