• fatty fluid replaces normally air-filled hair shaft and creates shiny look
• appearance is comparable to satin mice although adult coat may be uneven and more oily than shiny
• maintenance of glossiness is background dependent: on C57BL/6J background classification becomes difficult with diminishing glossiness

• hair shaft is twisted and indented with irregularly spaced medullary cells
|
• tend to septulate, are thicker and have reduced number of constrictions
|
• identified at birth by thin, short, curled whiskers
• lose curliness with age but remain irregular
|
