Mouse lines carrying:
Fshbtm1Zuk mutation (1 available); any Fshb mutation (12 available)
phenotype observed in females
phenotype observed in males
N normal phenotype
cellular
• 75% reduction of epididymal sperm count relative to wild-type
• 40% reduction in the number of motile sperm relative to wild-type

endocrine/exocrine glands
• blocked prior to antral follicle formation
• progressive reduction in size beginning at 14 days of age
• however, serum testosterone levels in males were similar to those of wild-type and the epididymides and seminal glands were of normal size

homeostasis/metabolism
• 50% decrease relative to wild-type
• FSH was undetected in the pituitary

reproductive system
• 75% reduction of epididymal sperm count relative to wild-type
• 40% reduction in the number of motile sperm relative to wild-type
• blocked prior to antral follicle formation
• progressive reduction in size beginning at 14 days of age
• however, serum testosterone levels in males were similar to those of wild-type and the epididymides and seminal glands were of normal size
• markedly thinner than wild-type
• females but not males are infertile

endocrine/exocrine glands
• 30% decrease in the number of sertoli cells relative to wild-type
• 60% reduction in weight relative to wild-type

reproductive system
• 46% reduction in spermatogonia
• decline in germ cell numbers that becomes more marked as spermatogenesis progresses; 46% reduction in A and I spermatogonia and a 60% reduction in round spermatids
• 30% decrease in the number of sertoli cells relative to wild-type
• 60% reduction in weight relative to wild-type
• lower Sertoli cell to round spermatid ratio
• decrease in the ratios of spermatogonia and early stages of the first meiotic prophase (preleptotene, leptotene, and zygotene) to the later stages of meiotic prophase (pachytene and diplotene) and of pachytene/diplotene spermatocyte to round round spermatids, indicating impaired spermatogenesis
• 60% reduction in round spermatids
