immune system
• medullary thymic epithelial cells that present self antigen are not present in these mice
• when thymus is transplanted to nude mice, auto-reactive T cells are generated suggesting a defect in negative selection

growth/size/body
• incisors and molars are not evident up to 80 days of age
• teeth fail to erupt due to bone completely surrounding the incisors and cheek teeth
• nasal associated mucosal tissue is small and hypocellular
• mice are runted with a smaller body size evident by weaning age
• spleen-to-body weight ratio is twice that of controls

craniofacial
• incisors and molars are not evident up to 80 days of age
• teeth fail to erupt due to bone completely surrounding the incisors and cheek teeth
• domed skull is part of the osteopetrotic phenotype characteristic of these mice
• occurs due to shortening and ossification of bones at the base of the skull
• nasal associated mucosal tissue is small and hypocellular

skeleton
• osteoclasts fail to form despite the presence of osteoclasts precursors in the bone marrow
• osteoclasts are absent in these mice
• long bones have an increased cross-sectional diameter
• the axial skeleton and the base of the skull have higher bone density
• cortical bone is thin and poorly mineralized
• mice are osteopetrotic with shortened long bones and mineralization within the bone marrow cavity
• other osteopetrotic features include wide, poorly organized growth plate, thin cortical bone, and abnormal mineralization of alveolar bone

hematopoietic system
• osteoclasts fail to form despite the presence of osteoclasts precursors in the bone marrow
• spleen-to-body weight ratio is twice that of controls
• splenic numbers of CFU-GM, -GEMM, -E, and -M are all elevated with CFU-GEM and CFU-M elevated more than 10-fold
• percentage of erythroid precursor cells is significantly increased in the spleen by more than 15-fold
• bone marrow cellularity is 10% of normal
• granulocyte/neutrophil numbers are increased
• granulocyte/neutrophil numbers are increased
• B cell numbers are reduced by half
• mature B cell numbers are reduced by 40%
• osteoclasts are absent in these mice

limbs/digits/tail
• shortened limbs are part of the osteopetrotic phenotype characteristic of these mice

respiratory system
• nasal associated mucosal tissue is small and hypocellular

• B cell numbers are reduced by half
• mature B cell numbers are reduced by 40%
• osteoclasts are absent in these mice
• Peyer's patch numbers are consistently decreased
• Peyer's patches are smaller and contain fewer B cells than controls
• lymph nodes are absent in these mice

cellular
