• when challenged with a PspA+ bacterial strain, mice have a 5-fold higher burden 6 hours after infection
• mean time of death is 24 hours after infection while for controls its over 48 hours
• when challenged with a less virulent PspA- bacterial strain, mice on average die 3.5 days after infection compared to none in wild-type controls
• only 14% of mice survive PspA- infection while all wild-type controls survive
