• peripheral CD8+ T cells from mutant mice display normal cytotoxic effector function against in vivo viral infection with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) and vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV)
• the subset of CD8alpha+ mature thymocytes is reduced to 20% of that in wild-type control mice
• in contrast, the intraepithelial lymphocyte (IEL) number is within normal range
• in peripheral lymphoid organs, the ratio of CD4+ to CD8alpha+ T cells is approximately 10:1 versus 1.6:1 in wild-type control mice
• CD8alpha expression on immature thymocytes and peripheral T cells is reduced to 44% and 53% of wild-type levels, respectively
• in contrast, CD8alpha expression levels on IEL remains unaffected
• homozygotes display reduced CD8alpha expression and thymic maturation of CD8+ T cells
