• short-term plasticity is altered by accentuating short-term depression
• hippocampal neurons show more pronounced short-term depression
• the deeper short-term depression is not associated with changes in evoked release during burst stimuli
• hippocampal neurons show reduced paired-pulse ratio with a more pronounced short-term depression
• however, spontaneous neurotransmitter release in glutamatergic hippocampal neurons is unaltered

• miniature excitatory postsynaptic current (mEPSC) release rate of hippocampal neurons in network cultures, but not in autapses, is increased indicating increased spontaneous glutamate release
• the normalized mEPSC frequency is increased and the decay is slightly, but significantly, faster
• however, the amplitude and rise time remains unchanged for hippocampal neurons and the frequency and kinetics of mEPSCs in autaptic neurons are unchanged
• hippocampal neurons show an increase in spontaneous release frequency in network cultures, but not in autapses
