• reduced number of spermatocytes, spermatids and spermatozoa in older (4-10 month old mice); apoptotic spermatocytes were observed
• the early onset of testicular atrophy appears to mimic a dysfunction of oxidative phosphorylation that normally occurs with aging

endocrine/exocrine glands
• abnormal basophilic structures near the luminal region of the seminiferous tubules by 6 weeks of age; in control animals, these structures were not apparent until 17 months of age
• a number of testes from homozygous animals were small in size and low in weight
• after 4 months of age, testes appeared atrophic, and lost germ cells as a result of increased apoptosis
