Morphological changes in the stomach and intestine of Car2n/Car2n and Car9tm1Spas/Car9tm1Spas mice

digestive/alimentary system
• a few mice have enlarged small intestinal crypts
• 40% of mutants have mild glandular atrophy
• gastric pit-cell hyperplasia of the stomach in all mutants, with 60% exhibiting mild and 40% moderate hyperplasia
• the net basal bicarbonate secretion and the net bicarbonate output during prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) stimulation are significantly increased in mutants

endocrine/exocrine glands
• a few mice have enlarged small intestinal crypts
• 40% of mutants have mild glandular atrophy

digestive/alimentary system
N
• homozygous mutant mice display normal gastric acid secretion and appropriately acidic pH as well as normal systemic acid-base status and plasma electrolyte values
• homozygous mutant mice display rare cases of duodenal adenoma
• newborn mutant mice display mild alterations in the thickness of the gastric mucosa as early as day P0.5
• deregulated proliferation affects the mucosa without any evident morphologic alterations of the cells and without any significant changes in cell death
• the hyperplastic mucosa contains an increased number of parietal cells, but their proportion is significantly lower than in wild-type controls
• homozygous mutant mice are viable and fertile; no other phenotypic alterations are observed in other tissues, except for rare cases of duodenal adenoma

endocrine/exocrine glands
• the hyperplastic mucosa contains an increased number of parietal cells, but their proportion is significantly lower than in wild-type controls
