cellular
• fibroblasts infected with adenovirus encoding cre show mitotic abnormalities with defects in chromosome alignments; in some cases, one or two chromosomes are displaced from the metaphase plate, in other cases chromosomes fail to align or are clustered near the poles in a centrophilic position
• percentage of mitotic cells with misaligned chromosomes increases over time, from 28% at 24 hours postinfection with adenovirus encoding cre to 43% at 48 hours postinfection
• misaligned chromosomes result from a failure of chromosomes to congress, not from premature sister chromatid separation
• fibroblasts grown in vitro show a reduced number of kinetochore-associated microtubules
