Pea15atm1Chne mutation (1 available); any Pea15a mutation (14 available)
phenotype observed in females
phenotype observed in males
N normal phenotype
growth/size/body
• homozygotes display a reduced body weight relative to wild-type littermates

nervous system
N
• at 2 months of age, homozygotes display normal brain gross morphology and weight relative to wild-type mice
• no obvious differences are observed in the number, morphology, or organization of glial cells, as indicated by GFAP labeling of hippocampal astrocytes
• in culture, primary astrocytes harvested from mutant mice are more sensitive to TNF-induced apoptosis than wild-type astrocytes, as indicated by DAPI, annexin V, and TUNEL staining

reproductive system
• at 8 weeks of age, mutant testes show a significant increase in the number of apoptotic spermatocytes (stages IX and XI) relative to wild-type testes, as revealed by TUNEL analysis
• increased apoptosis of spermatocytes is not restricted to a specific step in spermatocyte development but occurs throughout the epithelial cycle
• in contrast to spermatocytes, spermatogonia remain relatively unaffected
