• although vacuolating cytotoxin VacA produced by Helicobacter pylori is incorporated into gastric epithelial cells to the same extent as in wild-type mice, homozygotes do not show gastric ulcers or other mucosal damage as wild-type mice do

• mice exhibit a slower rate of spatial learning at 20 weeks of age but not at 8 weeks of age
• in the hidden-platform task of the Morris water maze, the overall escape latencies of mutants are longer than those of wild-type mice
• in the transfer test of the Morris water maze, mutants show a decrease in the time spent in the trained quadrant compared to wild-type mice

nervous system
• long term potentiation (LTP) is enhanced in the CA1 region of the hippocampus in adults
• however, enhanced LTP is not due to modification of NMDA receptor properties
