• bone marrow-derived macrophages show a 50% reduction in the rate of phagocytosis of Listeria, but a normal rate of phagocytosis of Salmonella
• mutant bone marrow-derived dendritic cells show a reduction in the ruffling response when unstimulated or stimulated with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor compared to wild-type cells
• increase in susceptibility to Listeria monocytogenes infection but not to Salmonella enterica infection
• increase in susceptibility is attributed to defects in immune cell motility
