• mutant testes were approximately 30% the weight of those of wild-type
• female gonads were morphologically and functionally normal

• ectopic and reduced numbers of germ cells were observed at E15.5
• the number of germ cells was further reduced by E18 and no germ cells were detected at 4 weeks of age
• apoptosis was observed in the testes until they were devoid of germ cells
• mutant testes were approximately 30% the weight of those of wild-type

• though males showed severe germ cell deficiency and were sterile, female mice were fertile

• at E18.5, the number of male germ cells is reduced, continues to be after birth and does not recover until 5 months of age
• at 2 and 6 weeks, unlike in wild-type mice three different types of seminiferous tubule morphologies are observed, namely: ones with few spermatogonia, ones with more spermatogonia localized to the periphery and ones with few spermatocytes in addition to spermatogonia
• at E18.5, some germ cells are localized outside of the testis cord
• at E18.5 and 1 week after birth, the number of cells undergoing apoptosis in the testes is increased compared to in wild-type mice
• however, apoptosis rates in the testes are comparable to wild-type by 3 weeks of age
