neoplasm
• 6 of 20 mice exhibit visible metastastic nodules in the liver; these consist of the same neoplastic cells and are calcified but contain less osteoid
• 20 of 30 mice develop osteosarcomas at ~15 months of age; multiple primary tumors involving anatomically distinct bones are noted in >5 of 20 mice
• most tumors originate in the axial skeleton and are found either at the base of the skull, in the vertebral column, shoulder, pelvic girdle, or ribs
• several tumors are found in the proximal humerus or femur whereas the distal bones of the extremities are not involved
• although tumor histology is variable, every tumor contains spindle-shaped cells and larger polygonal and pleomorphic cells with prominent blood vessels and all tumors contain osteoid with varying degrees of calcification; woven bone is noted in some tumors
• a cell line derived from a primary tumor produced osteosarcomas upon transfer into nude mice
