phenotype observed in females
phenotype observed in males
N normal phenotype
adipose tissue
• the brown fat in homozygous mutants is darker compared to wild-type mice
• the size of lipid droplets in brown fat adipocytes are reduced compared to wild-type mice
• the number of lipid droplets in brown fat adipocytes are reduced compared to wild-type mice
• the gonadal fat pad weight is reduced by 74% compared to wild-type
• the inguinal fat pad weight is reduced by 25% compared to wild-type
• the retroperitoneal fat pad weight is reduced by 37% compared to wild-type
• adipocytes are decreased in size about 2.6 fold, adipocyte sizes are more heterogeneous than in wild-type mice, and the overall number of adipocytes is reduced
• on a normal diet the overall white fat weight is reduced compared to wild-type
• on a high fat diet the overall white fat weight does not increase unlike in wild-type mice
• the overall number of adipocytes is reduced
• adipocytes are decreased in size about 2.6 fold
• adipocyte sizes are more heterogeneous than in wild-type mice

growth/size/body
• homozygous mice are protected against excess weight gain when on a high fat diet

homeostasis/metabolism
• circulating leptin levels are decreased
• homozygous mutant males but not females are resistant to the glucose lowering effect of exogenous insulin
• circulating adiponectin levels are decreased

liver/biliary system
N
• the liver is normal in appearance unlike in mice homozygous for Ppargtm1Rev that accumulate fat in the liver
