phenotype observed in females
phenotype observed in males
N normal phenotype
growth/size/body
• from 3 to 6 weeks of age mutant males grow slower and mutant females grow slightly faster than wild-type mice of the same sex, however by 7 weeks of age weights had normalized (J:94650)
• although gain weight is slightly slower after birth, body weight is normal at 5-7 months of age (J:279604)

integument
• sparse hair growth is seen at P10, however the hair becomes progressively thicker similar to wild-type in adults
• proliferation of keratinocytes in the hair bulb is delayed and blunted from P1 to P5
• only 10.9% of the keratinocytes PCNA positive at P4 compared to 57.4% in heterozygotes, this difference is less striking at P5
• the hair shaft is reduced
• early hair follicle development is normal, however by P4 the follicles have failed to enlarge and migrate deep into the subcutis
• no abnormalities are seen in the interfollicular epidermis
• the cell layers of the inner root sheath are reduced
• the hair follicles lack the uniform orientation seen in wild-type mice

behavior/neurological
• oral food intake is significantly larger than that in wild-type controls
• however, drinking volume is normal

digestive/alimentary system
• fecal K+ excretion is significantly larger than that in wild-type controls
• however, fecal excretion of Na+ and inorganic phosphorus (Pi) is not significantly increased
• fecal dry weight is significantly larger than that in wild-type controls
• glucose-induced current (Ig) in Ussing chamber (a measure of Na+ coupled glucose transport) is significantly smaller than that in wild-type jejunal segments
• however, intestinal electrogenic transport of several amino acids (phenylalanine, cysteine, glutamine and proline) is not significantly altered

homeostasis/metabolism
N
• glucose tolerance and sodium balance and aldesterone induction on a low sodium diet are normal
• fasting plasma glucose levels are significantly lower than those in wild-type controls
• fecal K+ excretion is significantly larger than that in wild-type controls
