• second coat is sparse with fewer zigzag hairs and mainly long hairs
• by 6 months of age, mice are hairless except for the facial region

• sebaceous glands normally associated with hair follicles are absent
• hair loss is coincidental with the first active growing phase
|
• exposed skin on the head following hair loss was red, then turned gray
• skin of aged mutants is gray and has an increase in dermal fibrous tissue
