• at 3 months increased numbers of apoptotic germ cells with darkly stained condensed nuclei are seen in many seminiferous tubules
• meitotic germ cells are found in clusters detached from the basal lamina
• at 3 weeks and 4 months of age testes weigh 20% and 50% less than wild-type
• by 4 months of age profound germ cell degeneration is seen, spermatids are depleted and spermatozoa are absent
• increased numbers of apoptotic germ cells
• however, spermatogonia and spermatocytes are present and proliferation of spermatogonia appears normal
• females produce smaller litters but no genotype dependent loss of pups is seen and females are able to nurse their pups
