N normal phenotype
homeostasis/metabolism
• treatment with human pituitary hormone significantly increased serum calcium in mutants but not in wild-type mice
• treatment with human pituitary hormone significantly increased levels of deoxypyridinoline in the urine in mutants but not in wild-type mice

renal/urinary system
• treatment with human pituitary hormone significantly increased levels of deoxypyridinoline in the urine in mutants but not in wild-type mice

skeleton
• osteoblast function is increased with a 1.5- and 2-fold increase in bone formation at 1 and 3 months of age, respectively
• however, osteoclast function is normal
• bone density is increased in 1 and 3 month old female mutants and in 3 month old male mutants compared to wild-type mice
• trabecular bone volume is increased in the vertebral bodies at 1 and 3 months and in the tibia at 3 months in female mutants
• trabecular thickness is the same however trabecular spacing is decreased in male and female mutants at 3 months of age
• after ovariectomy trabecular bone volume does not decrease in mutants unlike in wild-type mice
• after ovariectomy bone strength is decreased by 10% in mutants compared to a 35% decrease in wild-type mice

cellular
• osteoblast function is increased with a 1.5- and 2-fold increase in bone formation at 1 and 3 months of age, respectively
• however, osteoclast function is normal

embryo
N
• placental weight and structure are normal

homeostasis/metabolism
• during pregnancy maternal magnesium levels are decreased however calcium levels are similar to wild-type
• serum magnesium levels, but not calcium levels, are also decreased in null fetuses when the mother is either heterozygous or homozygous null

skeleton
• magnesium content of homozygous fetuses from homozygous mothers is significantly decreased compared to heterozygous fetuses, however magnesium content is not significantly decreased in homozygous fetuses from heterozygous mothers
