• mutant mice show a delayed clearance of P. aeruginosa from the ocular surface in vivo; the ocular surfaces of mBD-3-/- mice were colonized by significantly more viable bacteria at both 3 and 6 h postinoculation with 109 CFU of P. aeruginosa (190-fold at 3 h and 32-fold at 6 h; P < 0.03 for both comparisons)
