Fatal embryonic hemorrhage in C1galt1tm1Rpmc/C1galt1tm1Rpmc mice

mortality/aging
• mutants die between E13 and E14; all dead by E14

cardiovascular system
• capillary endothelial cells have distorted shapes, focal cytoplasmic thinning and enlarged extracellular spaces around the pericytes and endothelial cells
• capillaries in the brain have irregular or dilated lumens, have pericytes that lack the normal close apposition to the endothelial cells, and have enlarged extracellular spaces around the pericytes and endothelial cells
• abnormalities precede hemorrhages and tend to be more severe near hemorrhage
• in the brain parenchyma the microvasculature is chaotic with irregular capillary diameters and disordered branching
• in the yolk sac increased capillary branching and irregular vessel diameters are seen
• hemorrhages in the brain parenchyma with secondary bleeding into the ventricles are seen, however blood clotting is normal
• hemorrhages in the spinal cord with secondary bleeding into the spinal canal are seen
