• apoptotic cells are evenly distributed in the epithelia, mesoderm, and endoderm
• Background Sensitivity: on a congenic C3HHeB/FeJ background 46.9% of embryos arrest at E7.5 compared to only 11.1% in a mixed CAST/Ei background
• some embryos arrest later at E8.5
• some embryos display blisters at both sides of the midline at E8.5
• depletion of somitic mesoderm
• however, lateral plate mesoderm appears to be formed normally
• at E8.5
• kinked and/or wavy at E8.5

• in a few embryos somitogenesis appears to be initiated but cells fail to organize into the typical spherical structures characteristic of epithelial somites
